Our signature podcast takes a percussive turn as we feature longtime Mindy Abovitz Monk, who shares her thoughts on leadership, ownership and confidence in the drum category.
Mindy is a self-taught drummer and drum machine programmer with a Masters in Media Studies from The New School in NYC. She started Tom Tom Magazine; the first and only magazine about female drummers, in 2009. Tom Tom is now a full-color print magazine and media company with global distribution that reaches millions. Through Tom Tom, Mindy has launched a drum academy, co-founded the world’s only female drumming contest, “Hit Like a Girl,” and has thrown hundreds of events around the world in the name of diversifying the music industry. She hopes to impact the music industry through print media, new media, showcases, panels and community interactions and see a 50% increase of females engaged in music in the next 10 years.
Mindy has lectured, performed and held panels at: Web Tech Summit 2017 Lisbon, University of Cambridge, Smith College, NYU, Carnegie Mellon, UCSD, UCLA, RISD, The Apple Store NYC, Perez Art Museum Miami and MoMA PS1 amongst many other institutions.
